JANABY Brings a Carribean Flare to Boston
Malva Janaby, one third of the sibling trio that makes up the brand JANABY, juxtaposes bright colors from his Caribbean roots with East Coast street-style.
He showcased a joint collection with pieces from the lines “SAIL VII” and “K-MAMBO” at an exhibition produced by House Fashion Week on Oct. 15.
Janaby shared some insight on what preceded this melting pot of a lineup, the following is an abbreviated transcript of that conversation.
Q: What did the early stages of your career look like?
I would take part in as many shows as possible as a way to get my foot through the door and gain recognition. As time went on, we noticed that more people knew who we were before an introduction.
Q: Where do you draw inspiration?
My inspiration comes from wherever I am at that moment. When I’m out, ideas randomly come to me which is why I always have my sketch book and pencil with me.
Q: Is there a cultural influence on your designs?
Yes. I come from the Caribbean, where bright colors are a representation of my culture. Everywhere you go you see bright colors around you, even the houses there have bright colors. Some of my designs include those features.
Q: “Fashion is easy just like you,” is printed on the back of one of your jackets, what does that mean to you?
The message is simple (Just be yourself)
